If you love a cheeseburger but don’t feel like firing up the grill or shaping patties, these cheeseburger wraps are the answer. All the flavors of a classic diner burger – seasoned ground beef, melted cheddar, sweet caramelized onions and a tangy homemade burger sauce – are rolled up in a flour tortilla, then toasted in garlic butter until the outside turns golden and crisp.
The beef is cooked loose, like taco meat, with garlic, spices, tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce, so every bite is juicy and full of flavor. It is a quick weeknight dinner that is easy to hold, easy to customize and a big hit with kids and adults alike.

Ingredients
For the beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil.
- 1 small onion, diced, and 1 tbsp minced garlic.
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef, 80–85% lean – a little fat keeps the filling juicy.
- 1 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp chili powder, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 3/4 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper.
- 1 tbsp tomato paste.
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) water and 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce – they turn the drippings into a light, savory sauce that coats the beef.
For the caramelized onions
- 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp butter.
- 1 small onion, diced, and a pinch of salt.
For the burger sauce
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise, 2 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp yellow mustard.
- 1 to 2 tsp sweet pickle relish and 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce.
- A pinch each of salt, pepper and paprika.
To assemble
- 4 large (10-inch) flour tortillas – burrito size, so the filling stays inside.
- 1 1/2 cups (170 g) shredded cheddar.
- 2 tbsp butter, melted with 1 small clove garlic, minced, and 1 tbsp chopped parsley.
How to Make It
1. Caramelize the onions – medium-low, 15 minutes
In a skillet, heat the olive oil and butter, add the diced onion and a pinch of salt, and cook, stirring now and then, until soft and deep golden. Lower the heat if the edges brown before the onion softens; they should be sweet and jammy, not crisp.
2. Make the burger sauce – 3 minutes
While the onions cook, stir together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and paprika. Taste and add more relish if you like it tangier.
3. Cook the beef – medium-high, 10 minutes
In a second skillet, heat the oil and cook the onion for 3 minutes, then add the garlic for 30 seconds. Add the ground beef and break it into small crumbles. Cook until no pink remains, then stir in all the spices and the tomato paste. Ground beef is safe at 160°F (71°C). Spoon off excess fat if there is a lot in the pan.
4. Add the sauce – 3 to 5 minutes
Pour in the water and Worcestershire sauce and simmer, scraping the bottom of the pan, until the liquid has mostly reduced. The beef should look glossy and moist, with no liquid pooling in the pan; too much liquid will make the tortillas soggy.
5. Fill the tortillas – 5 minutes
Warm the tortillas for a few seconds in the microwave so they fold without cracking. Sprinkle a handful of cheddar down the center of each, top with a quarter of the beef and a quarter of the onions, then drizzle with burger sauce. Fold in the sides, then roll up tightly from the bottom. Leave about 2 inches (5 cm) of tortilla free on each side so it can fold over the filling.

6. Toast in garlic butter – medium, 2 to 3 minutes per side
Wipe out a skillet and set it over medium heat. Brush the wraps with the garlic butter and place them seam side down in the pan. Cook until golden and crisp, then flip and toast the other side. Starting seam side down seals the wrap so it doesn’t unroll, and the cheese inside melts as the outside browns.
7. Serve
Sprinkle with parsley, cut each wrap in half and serve with the remaining burger sauce for dipping.
Tips for the Best Cheeseburger Wraps
- Reduce the beef well. The filling should be moist but not wet. This is the most important step for a crisp wrap.
- Use large tortillas. Small tortillas tear when you fold in the sides. Burrito-size flour tortillas give you room to roll tightly.
- Toast over medium heat. Too hot and the tortilla scorches before the cheese melts.
- Add some crunch. Diced dill pickles or shredded lettuce, added just before rolling, bring the fresh bite of a classic burger.
Make Ahead and Storage
The beef filling, onions and sauce can all be made up to 3 days ahead and kept in separate containers in the refrigerator; warm the beef before filling so the cheese melts. Assembled, toasted wraps keep for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, wrapped individually. Reheat them in a dry skillet over medium-low heat or in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5 to 6 minutes. The microwave works but softens the tortilla.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ground turkey or chicken?
Yes. Add 1 tablespoon of extra oil since they are leaner, and cook them to 165°F (74°C). The safe minimum temperatures for ground meat and poultry are listed on the FoodSafety.gov temperature chart.
Can I make them in the air fryer?
Yes. Brush the rolled wraps with garlic butter and cook them seam side down at 375°F (190°C) for 6 to 8 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden.
What cheese works best?
Sharp cheddar gives the classic cheeseburger flavor. American cheese melts the creamiest, and a Mexican cheese blend or pepper jack adds a little heat.
